Heads or Tails category this week: “SHAKE”

Well, there are two things that came to my mind when I read the theme for this week. A memory of my childhood. Well, actually BOTH of the items I thought of came from my youth. When I was a youngster of 5 or 6, each Saturday after my dad got home from work, I, my brother, my sister and my mother were are cleaned up nice for a night out for dinner. It wasn’t anything fancy, no sit down type restaurant; those kind were unaffordable by my parents’ one worker income! But,none the less, we were happy to be able to go out to eat. It was in Lincoln, Nebraska, right down town on the main street. That was “O” street. It still IS considered main street, tho it’s now part of ‘old town’ Lincoln. The place was a drive-up type where you sit in the car and eat, or order and take it home. We were all gussied up to sit in the car! LOL Still, I remember the fun time had by us all. The drive up was called “The Mug”. Outside the building, even from the distance of about a mile or so, driving along and waiting for traffic lights to change green, on the horizon, I could see peeking through the front seat [back in those days the front seat was a 'whole seat' with the backrest flipping down for the ones who rode along in the back seat could get into the car...there was a slim gap between dad's backrest and mom's [the passenger] —anyway, I could peek through there and see this huge, monstrous, colossal, giant chocolate sculpture –a billboard like, and it was a chocolate Milk Shake…in the “Mug”. They were thick, icy cold, sweet, and oh such a Saturday night time treat for us all. Oh we all ordered cheeseburgers with the shakes.

Then, a bit older but still a child of probably pre teen, I remember a commercial of a new product that was sweeping the nation. It was called….Shake N Bake! Not only was the commercial insipid, but so was the product! Of course my mom, who loved to cook by the way, wanted to try it. You know, something new. Something that would make her meal not so mundane for her loved ones. She convinced dad to buy the two kinds….the pork, and the chicken. Now my mother’s fried chicken was out of this world ‘southern fried’. And her fried pork chops were always good too. [I, tho, really liked the potatoes and the gravy from the pan drippings most!] Anyway, we helped or watched her prepare the new stuff. It smelled good while cooking…we all sat down at the table [yes, back then, if you didn't eat with the parents at 'dinner time' you were out of luck! You missed your chance! We ALL sat at the table and dined together!] So, we sat down -dad was always first to get his share and then he’d pass it to us kids…we each got a chop or a piece of chicken…and all the other fixin’s —ready, eat! Ewwwwwwww. Nasty!!! Needless to say, none of us got a chance to say to everyone “No daddy, it’s Shake n Bake, and I he’pt”!! It never came in our house again. Mom’s from scratch cookin’ was soooo much better.

[comment here if you'd like to skip my Google Browser Beta below]

Sunday afternoon, after reading about the new browser for anyone to download and install, I thought I’d give it a try. Well, I did! And I disliked it from the get-go. Let me explain….

With Firefox you have so many options and so many ad-on features that I did NOT find with Google Chrome. And the ONE THING that I really ‘need’ while browsing is the Ad Block! While working with the new browser I opened some of my bookmarks that were automatically imported to Google’s new browser that was an option as installing. I began clicking on those bookmarks of mine and so many ads and animations began to appear! No way! So, tho it seems pretty well organized, I would prefer my Firefox. That, to me, is the most user friendly browser around. Nope…Google Chrome Browser, while the features are somewhat innovative and less cluttered, there just aren’t my favorite features available while I surf the net. It’ll continue to be Firefox usage for me. I’ll wait a while and then test drive the new browser again to see if there are any features that make more sense in the future. Also, Google’s new browser, as with Google Earth, and many more exe files from Google’s downloads, it seems that privacy is not an issue with those that program their new files for the computer and internet users. And, by the way, it is STILL in Beta, so there WILL be a lot of tweaking before it’s all set up with the best features possible, I suppose.

HoT entry below this prayer request

A long time online friend who evacuated last week from the threat of Hurricane Ike, living just a few miles north of Galveston Island, Texas, has been in my thoughts since landfall. We’ve been emailing each other for a few days.

Here is her last email from yesterday afternoon:

We heard we can park on hwy and walk in from there (about 2 miles) entrance only with our IDs so that is the plan tomorrow. I have seen some photos but none of our specific house, after seeing those photos it may be just was [as?] well. The debris is mind boggling! I just keep telling myself…it’s only stuff…it’s only stuff. I’ll check in when I can, a couple of my coworkers have power now so can use the computer there and one has even offered a room for us and our cats so we can be close to work on our home until it is safe to be there. I have to tell you, it blows me away that we really got hit this time. I suppose it will sink in when I am cleaning up the dead fish and chasing out the damn snakes from my little house. I just never really believed it would happen, you know?

Today, she and her husband will drop off her cats at a friend’s house and then the two will go farther down to their exit and walk into the subdivision. I ask that you take this graphic [click on it to open in a new window -then save & add to your blog], pass it on for a continual circle of prayer and strength -with your prayers that they have a home and find that there is not much damage. If you’d know P J, you’d be saddened that this vicious storm disrupted her life….she’s the sweetest! Here is an example of her loving nature…she found a feral cat, fed it, loved it…helped it survive. She took the cat in with her family, already with two cats of their own. Yet, after finding out that the feral cat she took in was pregnant, she let some of the kittens out for adoption yet, when she saw the turmoil the kittens had to go through, and knowing what they had already gone through at the animal adoption agency…she and her husband took them all in and became a family of many. She calls her furbabies the ‘six pack’…and the stray kittens born to them…are all named after the cast of LOST.

Please, pray for these two wonderful people. Keep them in your thoughts as they trek through the piles of debris left behind, to finally get a chance to find their home —

Recipe is this week’s prompt.

This one that I share today is something that I tried nearly 20 years ago or so and it was so good that my son, Erik, [I believe he was on USMC leave at the time 'cause Irene was already pregnant with Clint and not living with us any longer] said upon finishing his first helping: “I think I need a 2nd opinion on this.” And he went back for another helping. After that helping, a hefty one at that, he stood up licking his spoon and stated: “I need to have a specialist check it out.”

Well, needless to say he had a 3rd helping. And from that day forward, we use the same expressions he used when we try something that is just beyond good! We’ve even had to have a 2nd specialist sometimes. LOL

Okay, so the recipe is called: SEX IN A PAN [yep, pick up your jaw, that IS what it's called]

1/2 c Margarine; melted
1 c Pecans; chopped
1 1/2 c Graham wafer crumbs
8 oz Cream cheese
4 c Cool whip; divided, thawed
3 oz Chocolate instant pudding
3 oz Vanilla instant pudding
3 c Milk
1 Unsweetened chocolate square
1 c confectioner’s sugar

Mix well margarine, pecans and graham wafer crumbs
and pat into 9×13 inch pan. Bake at
350 degrees F until lightly browned,
about 20 minutes. Cool completely. Beat together
cream cheese, sugar and 1 cup of
Cool Whip. Spoon onto baked layer. Mix both
puddings with milk and beat per package
directions. Let pudding almost thicken and pour
over second layer. Put remainder of Cool Whip
on top and swirl melted chocolate throughout
topping.

[Autumn 'trinkets' around our home, below -Otherwise comment HERE]

I finally received an email from Erik. Tho he still isn’t back in Houston, which is probably a good thing, he is keeping in contact with his friends who also live in the Houston suburbs and has been updated on the situation around his home. He seems to not be worried. Of course, while out of the entire USA, there isn’t much he can do until he returns. I tend to be a worrier, so my concern is typical of me. He told me that his area was ‘up’ the next day –I’m thinking it means power. Dunno tho. Time will only tell. He should be back in the states by the weekend. It’ll be a long week for me, I will still not stop fretting over Ike, until I hear from him once he gets back and assesses the damage if any to his home.

So, getting away from the hurricane…thank goodness, huh? I’m tired of it…and I bet you are too, just visiting with me. It’s time to move on. Today is another day, can’t dwell on the affects and effects of disaster forever. I took some photos of our Autumn display around the house. Care to view them with me? All with mouseover captions, here they are:

By the way, the wooden bowl that is holding the glass Autumn beads and angel is hand made…by Erik. From many many years ago during his extra curricular class in Jr. High School…wood shop. It’s beautiful. I should take a photo of it all alone so you can see the wonderful workmanship.

More to come later…

Now, for the Show N Tell for the week – - -

I have this one special area in our home that is decorated for the certain season or holiday. For the past couple of months, it’s been barren. And as most know, when we moved about three years ago to the state of Texas, prior to that, I donated all my craft projects [mainly huge wreaths, grapevine mostly] to Goodwill as we were downsizing for the packing and such. Well, now that we’re completely settled once again, I’ve been trying to reestablish another collection of holiday/seasonal wreath projects. This past couple of weeks I’ve been working on something patriotic in theme for our Independence Day that will be here in less than a month.

And if you don’t know this by now, I’ve nearly become a vegetarian. And I’ve lost several fatty pounds in weight while doing so. Some of my clothes no longer fit properly, so I have slowly packed them in a box with intentions of donating them. When I took them to our donation center, I walked through and found this cute little ratty ol’ thing that would be perfect for my ‘special’ area. I bought it for fifty cents and brought it home, got out my acrylic craft paint box and started cleaning it up and painting it!

The star was quite dirty and brown, natural wood color. It’s wicker, wire and wood. I painted some white stars around the blue wooden section [trying to evenly space them around], painted the wicker red. Then while the white painted stars were still wet, I sprinkled some white frosty glitter for a festive touch.

After that was done, then thinking of what to add for decoration. I have had this Patriotic Beany Baby Teddy Bear perched on a shelf for months and I figured he’d be perfect to glue into the one corner on the left. And as always I ended up at Hobby Lobby this past week in search of some sparkly goodies to add! I purchased a flat miniature wooden USA piece the shape of the states. Painted it frosty white and again added the white glitter. I bought two inexpensive red white and blue streamers, and curled some of them to represent fireworks. I found a small bird house painted in patriotic colors and glued that beside the bear. And then for the finishing touch I sewed his right paw to make a ‘loop’ and stuck an “American” pinwheel to have it ‘look’ like he’s holding it! And then the final step was to add a miniature red cardinal flying out of the birdhouse portal. Done! And hanging in the view of all who walk by!

Here are a couple close-up photos [with captions on mouseover]

If you were here for my Thursday meme, you’d know I didn’t have the opportunity to be online much after the 8 a.m. shift for construction workers; they cut cable by accident. Okay, then…if you also read I had some of the most tasty toffee at the mall. And that I came home and the cable still wasn’t repaired, so I ended up making MORE toffee here at home. Boy howdy, is it good. I searched and searched online for a recipe that DOESN’T use butter. Since it’s loaded with fat that I don’t necessarily need anymore, and try to avoid at all costs.

I couldn’t find one, and all the ones I did find said butter…”No substitute”!!

One I found on the Food Network I thought I could improvise a bit on it. It also called for water. Well, what is margarine [the 98% fat free kind] but rubber flavoring and WATER? Right? So, I figured I could just eliminate the water from the recipe and it’d be a ‘go’! So I poured the sugar and the margarine into the pan, and began melting and stirring…stirring at a full boil for about 10 minutes. Then, since I rarely make homemade candies, I have no candy thermometer, and ended up using the cold water in a cup method to make sure that it had cooked long enough for it to be the ‘crack’ stage.

By that time, it was a rich golden brown, and ready to pour into the prepared cookie sheet. I had covered the sheet with waxed paper for easier handling after it hardened/cooled. In the meantime, I took my bag of chocolate chips [in my case, I used milk chocolate], and melted them in the microwave and added a teaspoon of canola oil to keep it smooth and creamy. Once that was done, I poured the melted chocolate over the toffee and added the crushed pecans on top; covering the nuts/chocolate with another sheet of waxed paper so I could press the nuts into the chocolate.

After cooling for a few hours, I brought the pan out of the ‘fridge and used a paper plate [nothing fancy and no dish to wash afterwards] and cracked the finished toffee into pieces. Yummy. The elimination of water and substituting real butter for margarine worked fine!! I think the trick of it all is to make sure it’s boiled to the fine crack stage on the stovetop!! Really good. And a treat that really shouldn’t be on the menu at all around here, but much needed for the psyche sometimes!!

This week’s theme/prompt is:

Ahhhhhhh mother.
[My link found just below about my mother should open in a new window!]

- – -

Well since I did a whole write-up about my OWN mother with the Fun Monday prompt for “hero”, I had to come up with something of a different perspective for the word mother —I’ll use each letter to represent something associated with ME -’cause I’m a mother of two myself and grandmother of two. Here’s my rendition of the “heads” toss for this week….

M

I love Movies! And this is a new print hubby purchased a few days ago for me -of one of my favorite love stories…Casablanca [Rick & Lisa played by Bogart & Bergman]

O

I like Ornamental objects! The left photo is my Miska™ Crystal cross that’s on my bedstand, an the right photo is my newest crystal windchime I found at a store on the island!

T

I collect some Toys!!! Of course some are ‘movie’ themed while others aren’t. The top left is “Tom Mater” from the animated movie, CARS [small frontal insert too]. I fell in love with that character! The top right is a gigantic stuffed tiger that is lounging at my bedside. On the bottom left is a soft sculpted stuffed tiger [I have several] propped up by my bookshelf in the bedroom. The bottom right photo is a monkey puppet. There’s a story behind this. It’s old! I bought it when Irene and Erik were VERY small, and I’d use it…while the kids would ask him questions and I’d answer in a ‘monkey voice’…they giggled beyond belief at this…we had hours of fun with it, and they both always comment upon seeing it hanging from my rattan room divider! It’s a family thing, and he’s a great piece of family history.

H

Hawaii is a favorite of mine! If we could afford it, we’d be livin’ there right now. We spent two weeks on the island of Oahu, with our son as the tour guide. He took a two week leave from the Marine Corps when he was stationed in Okinawa and we met him there in Honolulu! It was an awesome, unforgettable trip! I still bring up the fact that the first night I wanted to see the sun set over Waikiki Beach, the two guys [Bud and Erik] told me it was the same ol’ sun I see over in the continental America, but boy howdy did they every shut up when we got there from the hotel that first night and the ‘whole city of tourists’ were there also! I turned around and got the one photo of Diamondhead at dusk, and the other photo is taken off Pali Highway –a tourist stop is on the divide…and what a view of the bays and Pacific Ocean!! [This is also where I fell in love with the flower -state flower- the Hibiscus!]

E

A favorite sandwich of mine is EGG SALAD! I could actually gorge myself on this stuff. Thing is, now, I must limit my cholesterol intake, and I’ve learned a delicious way to fix this favorite….

6 large eggs [or in my case I cook Egg Beaters and chill to well cooled]
    1-2 tablespoons no-fat mayonnaise
    Salt and pepper
A tiny squeeze of lemon juice
2 stalks celery, washed and chopped finely
    1/2 bunch chives, chopped
    2 small handsful of lettuce
8 slices of whole grain bread, toasted

[recipe can be halved for two sandwiches]

R

I have seriously learned to take time to Relax! And I’ve learned from the best of ‘em!! Here are my mentors on relaxation skills! Left is Tahoe, on the desk to the left of the computer…on the right is Winston, stretched over the keyboard’s keypad! [Both are at the same time, AND I'm in the middle typing away with one finger, not to disturb our royal family! They both always come up on the desk with me in the morning...it's a ritual.]

News Flash!!!!

According to the news article, this is just in:

Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, and even shopping are all candidates for medical treatment and are recognized as genuine mental disorders, so what about the Internet? Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders………….”

Oh, this is probably quite a serious issue with a lot of people, world wide. But, I can’t help thinking….”Picture this”: Years down the line, there’ll be an internetaholic annonymous! IA for short. “Hi, my name in Hootin’ Anni, and I’m an addict”. :::giggles::: Scary concept!!!

For USA dwellers…don’t forget, today is the first day of Daylight Savings Time….spring forward!!! [set you clocks 1 hour ahead.] And I just noticed on the computer calendar that it’s March 9th. 40 years ago, hubby and I had our FIRST DATE! We went to a fancy restaurant in town. And what a night that was to remember. Believe it or not….two months and two days later, we married. And Have Been Married Ever Since!!!

A few days ago, Tuesday to be exact, we were to list ten of our favorite drinks. Well, I visited Wyspy, and she had a smoothie listed. And she stated that it’s her own special recipe. I begged asked her kindly, “what do you put in your smoothies?” She was kind enough to share it in her comments. And since she DID share it, I wanted to share this too. Trust me, I tried it that very day I read it [she told me where to go me where to find it], and it’s sooooooo darned good. I’m thinking that it’s the blackberries that sold me!! But maybe it’s the ginger. No wait, it has to be the strawberries. Yet, come to think of it, I love bananas too!! Well darn, it’s just the whole kittin’ kaboodle!!! It’s fantastic. Thank you, thank you Wysp. You’re a star!!!

    Hi Hootin’ Anni-
Here’s what I put in my smoothies….. it fills me up and I’m good to go. Yields 1 to 2 servings (depends how much you want)
1 medium or large sized banana
1 small yogurt of choice (I use vanilla)
6 or 8 fresh or frozen strawberries (thawed)
6 or 8 fresh or frozen blackberries (thawed)
    1/2 cup Orange Juice
    dash of ground ginger spice
Put all ingredients in deep bowl and blend with hand mixer. (I use Braun Hand Mixer) Continue blending until desired consistency. If you want thinner smoothies- add orange juice.
    Enjoy!

I beg you too…go over to Wyspy’s [this is her MAIN blog addy-different than the above mentioned blog entry] blog and thank her for making this ol’ lady very happy. She’ll know who I am…well, maybe not. But drop by and give her a big ol’ smooch-a-roonie for me okay?

And speaking of visiting other blogs…If you’re here, go to view this home. Its outstandingly beautiful interior is just, well….breathtaking. I am amazed with the whole concept. Irene shared this ‘true’ Hobbit-like home with us. Drop by…view, and tell her Hootin’ Anni sent you. You wont’ regret viewing this if you’re in awe of the movie/book!!!

Have you ever wondered what some editing notations mean – Abbreviations and/or symbols? Some, or all, you may know already.

      Here are some examples:

1- “sic” [usually found in quoting some writing/type]
it means: Sic is a Latin word, originally sicut meaning “thus”, “so”, or “just as that”. 5- “HBO
it means: A acronym for Home Box Office [cable television]

      6- “zip” code
it means: Zone Improvement Plan [United States Postal Service]

      7- * *==
it means: an emoticon representing the American Flag

      10- “
it means: In editing, to indent for a new paragraph. [technically called 'pilcrow sign']

      11- “I ♥ NY

it means: Medieval Latin postscriptum [to write later]

THIS IS A FAMILY FAVORITE–Begin Preparing EARLY in the morning—

I love lasagna! I love the shortened version I’ve come up with where I don’t have to cook the noodles, nor purchase those nasty tasting noodles that are called “pre cooked” noodles! And every time, my version comes out even better than Italian restaurants. But of course, my taste preference is different. I don’t care for ricotta nor do I like to use cottage cheese for a substitute. And I like it with a very light taste of Italian Seasoning…restaurant-style is too heavy on the herbs for my taste.

So I devised a simple, quick, recipe that is so tasty, even our son, who’s a picky eater, asked me once how I make mine.

      Absolutely no pre cooking involved.

I take a box of the regular lasagna noodles
and two cans of diced tomatoes [no salt added]
      a can of tomato paste
1 lb. bag of shredded sharp cheddar cheese [I only use about half the bag]
1 lb. bag of shredded mozzarella cheese [whole bag]
1/3 cup freshly shredded Parmesan cheese
      1 – 2 Tblsps. Italian Seasoning
1 Tblsp. ground garlic [or two cloves of fresh, minced]

In a blender, I blend the two cans of diced tomatoes and the can of tomato paste along with adding the garlic, the Parmesan cheese, and the Italian Seasoning. I use the ‘chop’ button, to keep the tomatoes coarsely chopped.

In a 9×13 glass pan, I pour enough tomato mix on the bottom of the pan to thinly cover the glass bottom. Layer it with the lasagna noodles and then a combination of the cheeses [use about 1/3 of the amount from above] lightly covering the noodles. I then add more tomato mix and cheese and noodles…continuing to layer the ingredients until I have four layers stopping with the sauce and cheese. Again, NO COOKING.

Cover it with tin foil and refrigerate for about 10 hours. [The noodles will soak up the tomato liquids and serve firm, but not pastey!] When you want to heat and serve, just cook it in a moderately hot oven, covered, until bubbly and hot. Remove the foil, and continue to bake until cheese is lightly browned.

Remove from oven, let set for about 10-15 minutes. Slice, serve.

      * *

I always make a cucumber-frozen pea, onion and pimento salad, in a light Italian oil and vinegar dressing, served on a bed of chopped Romaine lettuce for a side dish. And hot garlic toast. The cucumber salad is just sliced cucumbers, onions, pimentos, frozen peas and tossed with a vinegar/oil dressing with dried parsley.

It’s a great compliment to the lasagna dish.
Served well chilled and marinated for a couple of hours.

About | Theme: LONG | Roll
      Next week “small

My first “LONG” photo I found this week, is this. It’s the iron bar-like fixture near the topside of the photo, that’s going clear across the photo. Can you guess what it is? It’s something household, and quite useful. Guess? Awwwww, come on. I know you’ll know what it is. I’m sure!! [This image can be enlarged for better viewing/guessing]

And then, for my 2nd choice, to continue with this month’s holiday theme, I have this group of photos…it’s a new Santa. Funny thing is Carole at Pea’s Corner had posted on her blog of the most terrific looking and charming angel tree. She also noted that she found it at Michael’s and that there were Santa trees too…well, with the word Santa looming out in front of my eyes, I was down to our neighborhood Michael’s that very day….

It’s standing about 14 inches tall from the tip of his boots to the top of his pine tree hat/tip of his head. He can be posed whichever way you choose. I think he’s a delight. I even like how I captured his backside reflecting in the mirror. But the reason I picked these photos is because his legs are extremely thin and lanky compared to the rest of the ‘torso’. Which makes the illusion of LONG.

Last but not least, my 3rd photo – A long-standing tradition when our kids were young was to make a huge batch of pecan brittle. It’s just like Peanut Brittle but with a better tasting pecan. And it’s so simple to make. I kinda stopped making it for just the two of us after both kids grew up and left the ‘nest’. But this year, I was ‘tasting’ it, and decided to make a small batch. The recipe states it can serve 16, but I’d like to know just HOW they know that since it’s broken up into pieces. Anyway, it’s delicious. AND DID I SAY EASY? Yes, it is…it’s microwavable, and only takes about 10 minutes to prepare the mixture, cook it, and get it on the pan to harden. Simple, tasty, and okay, mouth-watering!! :::running out to get me a small piece as I type::: Yum!!!

And this recipe card can be enlarged to save if you wish!! Just click on the recipe image shown below, it’s in the jpg format ….

      We’re gonna find Nemo!!

NOTE: For this Tuesday, there is a LOT on my blog for the day. A recipe, a couple of daily memes [Head Or Tails, and Ten on Tuesday], tickets, and a tag that I finished and added!

      ©Disney

The other day, when we were out and about doing a bunch of little errands, we were on our way into the city to catch up on a few things at the cardiologist office, setting up tests and such. While we were downtown, we stopped for a fish sandwich at McDonalds [I love their fish fillet sandwiches] –on the serving tray were two discount coupons to Disney on Ice that was coming from Houston, where it’s playing now, to our town.

Just on a whim, knowing that both of us enjoyed the movie, Finding Nemo, I said “We should get ourselves some tickets, and go.” Bud nodded and said in reply “I know you’d enjoy it, so let’s.”

Allllllll-righty then. After our short lunch break, we drove the few miles to the BankCenter’s Auditorium and their Box Office…got the tickets. I can’t wait. Y’all know I’m a little kid in a grown-up body!! I really don’t think we’ll go wrong on this. We both love Disney films, and I love ice skating professionals. Can’t miss!!!

This week Skittles has -”November 13: HEADS – Road”

      ~By Robert Frost

      THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
      To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
      Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
      Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

      - – -
Q: What’s the difference between a dead skunk in the road and a dead Democrat in the road?
A: Vultures will eat the skunk.

      ROAD TO NO-WHERE!!

Ten on Tuesday is this for the week: 10 Songs That Bring Back Memories (and why)

I love music! Period!! I can be heard humming a song that’s in my head many-a-times! My favorite songs are way too numerous. It’s gonna be difficult just limiting myself to ten. The ones below probably ‘ages me’ and a lot probably haven’t even heard of them. But as I go through my mind right now trying to name some that are quite personal preferences, remember that I like ALL kinds of music and songs.

      1] Welcome to My World
(this is our song! It was played at our wedding party)

2] Then you Can Tell Me Goodbye
Kiss me each morning for a million years
Hold me each evening by your side
Tell me you’ll love me for a million years
Then if it don’t work out
Then if it don’t work out
Then you can tell me goodbye

Sweeten my coffee with a morning kiss
Soften my dreams with your sighs
Tell me you’ll love me for a million years
Then if it don’t work out
Then if it don’t work out
Then you can tell me goodbye

If you must go, oh no, I won’t grieve
If you wait a lifetime before you leave

      Then if you must go
Mmm, I won’t tell you no
Just so that we can say we tried
Tell me you’ll love me for a million years
Then if it don’t work out
Then if it don’t work out
Then you can tell me goodbye.

—this song was actually on the radio when we were on our way to the airport for our honeymoon trip!! I can still sing it word for word even today.

      3] Amazing Grace
For many reasons. I personally just love it for what if means to me! Also, it was one of my mother’s favorites! It’s personal.

      4] You Are My Sunshine
I used to sing this all the time to our daughter when an infant. Now-a-days is just brings back a great deal of good memories of her youth!!

      5] Ave Maria
When Luciana Pavarotti sang this [I have his recording] —I melted! I’ve known and heard this song sang many times by church choirs and over the radio and in movies and have been awed by it for years, but with Pavarotti’s rendition …. wow!!! Each and every time I hear this, I must stop and look to the heavens.

      6] Believe
It’s seasonal. From the movie Polar Express. Josh Groban. I DO believe, I do!!! For me it’s become a new traditional favorite around the holidays.

      7] Hero – Mariah Carey
Having to do with military, our son, the Marine Corps…many reasons. I love it!!

8] Theme from the original (1st) Pirates of the Caribbean
Why? It just has great rhythm, and is in a way, very classical with the crescendos, the lulls, the excitement of adventure all rolled into one.

      9] Stardust
      It just is…I love it.
      …”the melody of love’s refrain”

10A] All Songs sung by the Righteous Brothers —
Ebb Tide, You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling, Unchained Melody, Little Latin Lupe Lu, American Rock ‘n’ Roll, Soul and Inspiration…..you name it!!

10B] When Cats Take Over the World
This one is comical…yes, like I said, I like all music. This one just makes me laugh. It helps to be a cat lover!!! And Jamie Anderson, the singer —she’s Irish!!!
Here’s a link to the MP3 of When Cats Take Over the World!

…..must I stop at just ten songs?

I don’t often fix this as a side dish, and I don’t know why…it’s easy and full of healthy fiber! I really just never think of it often enough. But, last night after I had gone to the store and purchased one for dinner, I made it. It actually is a ‘favorite’ veggie for hubby…so he was pleased!!

      WINTER SQUASH RECIPE
      * 1 Acorn Squash, halved
      * 1/4 cup [or less --don't overdo] of butter
      * 2 tablespoons maple syrup
      * 1/4 cup of brown sugar
      * Salt & pepper [optional...I don't use either, but hubby likes the extra seasoning]

      PREP WORK

      Pre heat oven to 375 – 400 degrees F.

Discard the seeds out of each half, cleaning with a spoon.

Add the butter, maple syrup, and brown sugar, salt and pepper into the hollow of each ‘acorn’ half.

Place upright on a greased cookie sheet and roast for about 1 hour or until tender when flesh is poked with a fork.

This is a delicious, quick and easy side dish that is great anytime of the year. And even with the butter–the fiber in the squash outweighs the fat to make it a heart-healthy dish. [I guess you could use margarine or LESS of the butter, but to me using tasteless, artificial margarine... the additives aren't good for you either, so I opt for the real, creamy butter just put less in my half]

Serve hot! Each half is placed into an individual bowl, served as is right out of the oven!! Did I say it’s easy?!!!

      And lastly today,

      Siani Tagged me
With the Infamous Eight Random Things.

So, here goes eight more iddy biddy items about me you didn’t know—

One- I can’t spit! [I've tried and tried, but it ends up more drool than a spit ball!]
Two- I’m pretty good with mathematics [algebra, simple math, etc. etc.], except when it comes to geometry! The angles and degrees confuse me to no end. You should see me out in the darkened skies looking for 30 degrees north —searching for a planet or a nebulae. Too funny. Hubby always has to come to the rescue.
Three- My attitude toward dieting is nil! I don’t believe in the ‘gung-ho’ diets. Losing weight is simple if I want to…just eat LESS of everything! And drink 16 oz. of water before a meal. I can lose 5 pounds in a couple of days this way, easily. I guess if I want to lose more….I would stick with the regime of eating LESS and everything my heart desires…just smaller servings, for a long period of time!! [I did weigh 170 pounds one time, now I'm at 145 and holding....] But, I like myself the way I am….it’s more or less “Take me as I am, or not at all” attitude for me.
Four- I’m a stick-in-the-mud when it comes to all the new fangled items the consumer is faced with these days. I have a bad attitude about buying ‘big items’ on a whim. I can only feel that if I buy something that is the ‘in thing’ this week, it will be obsolete next week!! I would rather spend the extra money on entertainment that is live, or something that will create a memory!!
Five- Someone told me that books[even text books for school] are obsolete because of the internet!! Well, p-shaw!! They’re considered a treasure in our home…I love to sit and read a book.
Six- Most times, I crave things ‘in season’. Like apples in Autumn. Rice Krispie Treats for Christmas [hey, it's seasonal for me]. Pumpkin Pie in November. Bing Cherries in the July. [altho, ask hubby if this is true and he'd say 'no'! ---'cause he'd bring up the fact that he had to drive all over tarnation in November to find me watermelon (that was in the '60s --when produce wasn't found year 'round, on "in season") ---I was pregnant, and needed a fix...what can I say?] And to this day Irene [our daughter in my 'craving' womb at the time] HATES watermelon!! And yes, if you’re curious, he did find some…believe it or not at a 24 hour convenience store!!! [oops I failed to mention that it was around 12:30 a.m. that I wanted watermelon!! Oh please?----Don't get him started on the subject, we'll be here all day listening to him carry on and on about me and my watermelon!]
Seven- I’ve always had a secret desire to see a play on Broadway!
Eight- I, unlike others, have NO lucky number! At one time I was certain my lucky number was five…but then, maybe not. Seems ’5′ isn’t worth squat on the lotto tickets!!! Who’da known? Sounds like a lucky number to me….doesn’t it you?

I don’t do tagging myself, but if you wish to list eight things about you we don’t know, I’d be pleased to read your list!!
