This is the 1st Anniversary of the meme started by Barb – Heads or Tails. We’re encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ which means more or less….”Players? You have free reign!” This week our prompt is appropriately heads OR tails.

I’m going with TWO ‘Heads’ Up version.

The 1st:

A prayer [or best positive thoughts] for a friend of mine, and a new book coming to a bookstore near you!

I’d like to introduce you [without names] to a loving woman, “R”, and her man who has become an intregal part of my life online! In all actuality, it’s going to be, in sort, another anniversary of one definite ‘special occasion’. And this past Wednesday it was their 60th anniversary of that special occasion!! On the 14th of August these two love birds took an excursion that fine day in 1948 —an excursion that would last them a lifetime! You see it was the day a certain ring [engagement] was going to be purchased!!

When I saw this photo the other day in my email…I fell in love with it. You know how the saying goes, “a picture paints a 1000 words”? I see so much in this photo. I see love, I see happiness, I see determination, I see devotion, I see two young wonderful people! This couple is very special to me!! No, we’re not related, tho so many times in the several years I’ve known them by online friendship and mailings through the postal service…gifts, chats, scares, fun, teasing, cards…you name it, I’ve felt that they ARE a part of me in so many ways. When I opened this photo attachment, my heart skipped a beat…I fell in love with it as I’ve grown to love the couple! Why, looking at this photo is like seeing for the first time a relationship that will go on beyond life, and perhaps show others that being as one —that life is GOOD!!!

One more thing, this fine lady is going in for surgery Tuesday [probably is in surgery as you read this]. I ask that you keep her in your thoughts —and pray that the operation is successful!! ♥

[I received permission, okaying me to post this special photo!! Thank you dear hearts!!!] And to respect their privacy, I promised to not use any names here. Love you bunches, and hold you close to my heart!!!

    “Hi sweet Anni
But of course, You can use the photo all you want, and I am very honored that you think it is good enough to go on the net, Maybe you can brighten it up, or take some of the stains off, and this one is 60 years old you know.”

The 2nd ‘Heads’ UP:

I can’t wait….I can’t wait! How long is it now ’til October 14th?!! Maybe, just maybe Barnes and Nobel will have it out on the shelves before then. I do hope so…oh, I just can’t wait!

I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for the newest book of his. Finally. At last. I’m gonna be a happy camper book holder soon. Yes!!!

My favorite author is coming out with his 3rd in a series of OZ. As in the Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch. Adult fantasy come to life. The newest one [Wicked and the Son of a Witch are the two previous books] is entitled A Lion Among Men. I found out about the book about a year ago, that he was working on it; through a google search “New book for Gregory Maguire”. And I read a bit of what it was going to be about back then, tho the synopsis at the time was very scant. Now B&N has a more in depth version of the background of what’s going to be between the covers of his newest fiction….

A Lion Among Men complements the New York Times bestseller Son of a Witch in fleshing out the world of Oz, seen this time through the eyes of the Cowardly Lion-remembered from Wicked as a tiny cub defended by Elphaba. While civil war looms in Oz, an ancient and tetchy oracle named Yackle prepares for death. Before she can return to dust, however, the Cowardly Lion, an enigmatic figure named Brrr, arrives in search of information about Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West. As payment, Yackle, who hovered on the sidelines of Elphaba’s life, demands some answers of her own. Abandoned as a cub, Brrr’s earliest memories are only gluey hazes. But his path from infancy in the Great Gillikin Forest is no Yellow Brick Road. Seeking to redress an early mistake, he tumbles though a swamp of ghosts, becomes implicated in a massacre of trolls, and falls in love with a Cat princess. Sidestepping the laws that oppress talking Animals, Brrr cannily avoids a jail sentence by agreeing to serve as a lackey to the warmongering Emperor of Oz. A Lion Among Men traces a battle of wits between adversaries distracted by the armies approaching on either side of them. What does the Lion know of the whereabouts of the Witch’s boy, Liir? What can Yackle reveal about the auguries of the Clock of the Time Dragon? Is destiny ever arbitrary? Can those tarnished by infamy escape their sobriquets-cowardly, wicked, brainless, criminally earnest-to claim their own histories, to live honorably within their own skins before they’re skinned alive?

Monday afternoon, I ended up at Barnes N Noble and ordered one already…And I’m gonna be one of the first to hit the store in just a little over a month. Oh goodie, oh goodie!! Call me strange, but I do get excited over all his books. I have ‘em all [and one teen book he wrote about the tooth fairy coming to life too!]

Here’s my collection of first editions.

The top photo is the wisteria I planted in the ground this Spring. I bought it from the nursery it was in a 6″ container and about 2 feet high…look how it’s grown over the summer. [My other wisteria that I planted when we first moved here, ummmmm...Bud mowed over it! Never came back up.]

The second photo is one of two potted ferns sitting on our patio.

Once again, drugs vs. the patient!!! My Sunday Snippet is always something I read that makes me feel good. This time it made me feel good because what I read makes me convinced I made the right choice back in May of this year.

I knew it! I knew it! Another reason for me personally to go with my gut instincts!! I have a history of heart arrhythmias known as SVT, and my PCP wanted me to go on cholesterol drugs known as statin drugs, and I refused much to her dismay. Well, I did more than one stint of walking per day, and I took out all the red meats from my diet and became more or less a vegetarian. I do, once in a while consume chicken, to get the fat my body needs. She gave me the three months to get my cholesterol down on my own without medications…I DID. [ on my blog 5/28/08] Again, much to her surprise that I could do it without drugs. I KNOW too many drugs in a system just leads to complications, more going wrong with your body and breaking down of all your vital organs. It’s a fact. There is no getting around it. Yet, the physicians tend to over medicate….and I am not going to be one of them to sit idly and accept their choices when it’s my body, mind and soul they’re taking away.

Now I read just the other day that cholesterol lowering drugs WILL do more harm than good with individuals that have a history of or on arrhythmia drugs to keep the heart rate steady and intact. Yessiree Bob!!! I am not going to just take the doctors’ word anymore….I’m gonna refuse and take in more studies and do my own research. No more of this crap….I am fed up with all this…it’s a downright shame… I personally want to go to a doctor for a good checkup and get ADVICE – NOT get ‘you should be taking this drug…only to counteract another drug’!!!!

~ ~Patients taking some common medications for high cholesterol and irregular heart beats can suffer severe muscle damage because of a problem in the way the drugs interact, the government warned on Friday. Muscle injury is a risk with any of the cholesterol drugs known as statins, including Lipitor, particularly for the elderly. Although the risk of such injuries is low overall, they can be serious because they can lead to kidney failure and even death.

The Domino Effect [through the eyes of a pessimist]

1] Oil by the barrel sets a new high daily!
2] Fuel – Gasoline prices skyrocket!
3] Transporting goods -trains, trucks, planes, buses [city, schools, and national tour buses] – feel the crunch and..
4] Raise prices on everything, including the 1st piece of luggage for most airline traffic.
5] In turn, we get the brunt of it as consumers! While the CEOs see a 300% profit!
6] We are promised a tax rebate of $600 per individual to boost the economy!
7] To spend for fun and frivolously? I think not…
8] I can’t wait to see how this all ends; if ever -probably not in my lifetime.
9] I see an advertisement- “Wanna Sell your S U V? Good luck!!” And laugh at the humor but know it’s darn well true to life!
10] Fuel costs, food staples, electricity, propane, you name it…rises to record levels.
11] You can’t make your house payments…just the rich can sell/buy! Banks don’t wanna loan out anything.
12] Eventually no vacations–no filled hotels [I predict some will go belly-up this tourist season], no flight plans, no trips, nada!! For many. Others will just chalk it up to inflation and not care. Walking and/or biking looks like a last ditch effort.
13] And yet our dear George says the economy will level out with the rebates. I want to see Congress fight back harder; it’s dubious tho to see anything coming forth to help the economy/citizens…

More on the ‘domino effect’ -The COLA won’t budge! In fact, if we’re all lucky we’ll get a 2% adjustment while the cost of living goes up 6% or more!! GO FIGURE!! Crime will rise, people are reported syphoning gas out of cars while others work to PAY for it. Food is stolen, purses/wallets are snatched and women/men are killed for $5.00 – people are in dire straits…we’re all in this together, and we sit by —

What’s wrong with this picture?
[I know, I know --it only goes up to 2007..hehehehe! I guess for 2008, it's too early to say? Who knows.]

NOW—

–through the eyes of an optimist:

A famous quote from the movie, “Network” [circa 1976]—

Howard Beale: I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV’s while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. We know things are bad – worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’ Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot – I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad.
Howard Beale: [shouting] You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!’ So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell,
    [shouting]
Howard Beale: ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:
Howard Beale: [screaming at the top of his lungs] “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”

Are the oil company CEOs gonna listen to us?

I refused to take this:

I must ‘fess up. I respect and acknowledge that medical doctors [general practitioners in this case] have a higher education than I. But in some cases, their knowledge and know how when it comes to working with an individual [this case, me, the stubborn Irish lass!] doesn’t always sit well. Sometimes I feel doctor’s demeanor is more or less what I call ‘educated dummy’. And I know a lot of physicians personally, I have worked with them in the medical field. I’m not calling them dummies, I’m just thinking in the terms of their education and knowledge of the field in which they earned their degree, but still don’t know much on a personal level and how to work with a patient on a one to one basis…as an individual, instead of a meal ticket. Who else knows my body more than I? No one.

You see, three months ago I had to go in for my quarterly blood work. My cholesterol level was high. What she calls “too high” and that I’m “considered high risk” when it comes to health of the heart. Okay, yes, I smoke. She tried to bait me into taking a medication for that, to get me to stop. Tobacco is technically an herb…as is licorice candy and tea and coffee. Is coffee consumption a killer too? Probably, if you drink too much of it. Thing is, that shows me –again, stubborn –that shows me that I’d be taking another drug to counteract with another drug! And there is always a large potential of side effects of which I’m totally fearing because of what happened to me before with drugs.

While having the heart problems this past twelve years, the one particular med just up and decided to quit working for me. Then, the cardiologist put me on a new med. That one was lethal. I had tons of side effects and a larger potential of dying from the side effects [at one point I thought I was a goner!] than the SVT I experienced off and on for the dozen years! Three out of three cardiologists said that SVT is not life-threatening, but still needed to be controlled. TWO of them suggested the ablation. While the 3rd one…which I’d been seeing on a regular basis here in Texas, thought I’d be ‘cured’ with medication instead.

WRONG!! I was in the E R from nightmarish reactions to his ‘cure all’ drug. Lethal, I’ll tell you. Lethal.

I had the ablation. I, in fact, threatened to do a referral myself to get a specialist. Well, to keep a long story getting much longer, I don’t see HIM any more. But I still continue to see my primary care physician. One thing…I refused to take any more drugs. I said no to Zocor! Period!

She gave me three months to lower my high cholesterol. [of course little did she know that I would still refuse even after the three months time!] But I changed my diet. I went from a high meat diet –fatty foods, to nearly a total vegan diet. I will eat fish or a small piece of chicken about once a week. [okay, I did have a steak and shrimp for our 40th anniversary] That’s all. From there, it’s vegetarian all the way.

Friday, had my blood test. Drs. office calls and says the blood work results were back and the cholesterol dropped by 20 and the LDL [bad cholesterol was better than perfect!] For me personally, I had no doubt in my mind it’d work! And I said: “See, y’all don’t know everything!”

And to make another statement, smoking may be harmful, yes I’m sure. But so are prescribed drugs, or alcohol consumption, getting into your car and driving the streets, or even getting out of bed or a slippery shower.

Again, I’m probably blabbing away, but like Sandy said on HER blog, “It’s my blog”…I like her thinking!
