Archive for Candy

edition #73

I’ll let you in on a little secret of mine. It’s true….I actually spent an entire afternoon searching on Google for a particular candy where I had high hopes of finding so I could order it; a candy I continually bought way back in the ’60s and ’70s. A waste of time for sure, but it was interesting in the fact that once I got started on the quest, I actually found other weirdos fanatics in search of the very same.

At first I could not even remember the brand name. But, boy howdy, I could remember how tasty-tart they were. I remembered that they were imported [I was almost 100% positive they were from France], and that they came in a roll. Wrapped in white designed paper covering, foil and then the candies themselves were ‘stacked’ like lifesavers only wrapped individually —and all one flavor. And the flavor [the one flavor I always bought was sour cherry] was to ‘die for’!! So tart…so true to the real fruit taste….why, even now as I type, my mouth waters and my lips pucker! Mmmm, mmm, mmm! Yet, even tho I can still visualize the packaged product, the name eluded me.

I went into Google and typed many different things to see if it’d bring anything up with results that may lead me in the direction of an order form…

Nada, zilch, zero, nil….Nothing! But!!! As I stated before, I see dozens of others that long ago [early 2000's forums and message boards posts/threads] searched for them also!! The brand name was Regal Crown Sours, and the one list that was linked in one of the forums I visited – they were discontinued. Total Bummer-ation!!! One forum, from Diane states:

Looking for Regal Crown Sour Cherry Candy

Looking for a candy that was popular in the late 1960′s and 1970′s called Regal Crown Sour Cherry Candy, it was sold in a roll and each candy was individually wrapped in waxed paper. I believe it was imported from England. Was wondering if anyone knows if it is still sold or perhaps bought out by another company and marketed under a different name.Diane K May 22, 2001 02:19PM

One answer on the post threads:

I have been looking for these delicious cherry candy drops myself for 5 years…..!!!!! Please someone tell me where I can find them here in the USA or any where in the world. I will go there. These were my fav. candy and for some reason can’t find them at my local store in Bahrain (Arabian Gulf). I am here in the United States …and looked for them too and came across a number of people looking for them….so I am not the only one. Please inform me as my search goes on…
Thanks to everyone who loves and remembers the Great Regal Crown Cherry!!!!!! asmah abdulaziz Jun 02, 2005 03:49PM

More candy quest entries

One even stated something in regards to Cracker Barrel…but just underneath that statement thread another said that they can’t find them there either any longer since the company was bought out in the early 1990′s and no longer produces or imports them. Alas, my heart is broken. I was so sure I’d be successful online. Now, the closest thing I can think of is the hard candy “Jolly Rancher”…I know they have cherry flavored…perhaps I can search for them that have JUST the cherry instead of all flavors…the multi-flavored packages don’t entice me. But, if perhaps the cherry only in a bag I’d find…I’d hoard them!! Ya, I’m that selfish…just like Garfield the cat in his Halloween TV Special—-’Can-n-n-n-dy, candy, candy!”

Which leads me to my Thursday Thirteen

Now, for the Show N Tell for the week – - -

I have this one special area in our home that is decorated for the certain season or holiday. For the past couple of months, it’s been barren. And as most know, when we moved about three years ago to the state of Texas, prior to that, I donated all my craft projects [mainly huge wreaths, grapevine mostly] to Goodwill as we were downsizing for the packing and such. Well, now that we’re completely settled once again, I’ve been trying to reestablish another collection of holiday/seasonal wreath projects. This past couple of weeks I’ve been working on something patriotic in theme for our Independence Day that will be here in less than a month.

And if you don’t know this by now, I’ve nearly become a vegetarian. And I’ve lost several fatty pounds in weight while doing so. Some of my clothes no longer fit properly, so I have slowly packed them in a box with intentions of donating them. When I took them to our donation center, I walked through and found this cute little ratty ol’ thing that would be perfect for my ‘special’ area. I bought it for fifty cents and brought it home, got out my acrylic craft paint box and started cleaning it up and painting it!

The star was quite dirty and brown, natural wood color. It’s wicker, wire and wood. I painted some white stars around the blue wooden section [trying to evenly space them around], painted the wicker red. Then while the white painted stars were still wet, I sprinkled some white frosty glitter for a festive touch.

After that was done, then thinking of what to add for decoration. I have had this Patriotic Beany Baby Teddy Bear perched on a shelf for months and I figured he’d be perfect to glue into the one corner on the left. And as always I ended up at Hobby Lobby this past week in search of some sparkly goodies to add! I purchased a flat miniature wooden USA piece the shape of the states. Painted it frosty white and again added the white glitter. I bought two inexpensive red white and blue streamers, and curled some of them to represent fireworks. I found a small bird house painted in patriotic colors and glued that beside the bear. And then for the finishing touch I sewed his right paw to make a ‘loop’ and stuck an “American” pinwheel to have it ‘look’ like he’s holding it! And then the final step was to add a miniature red cardinal flying out of the birdhouse portal. Done! And hanging in the view of all who walk by!

If you were here for my Thursday meme, you’d know I didn’t have the opportunity to be online much after the 8 a.m. shift for construction workers; they cut cable by accident. Okay, then…if you also read I had some of the most tasty toffee at the mall. And that I came home and the cable still wasn’t repaired, so I ended up making MORE toffee here at home. Boy howdy, is it good. I searched and searched online for a recipe that DOESN’T use butter. Since it’s loaded with fat that I don’t necessarily need anymore, and try to avoid at all costs.

I couldn’t find one, and all the ones I did find said butter…”No substitute”!!

One I found on the Food Network I thought I could improvise a bit on it. It also called for water. Well, what is margarine [the 98% fat free kind] but rubber flavoring and WATER? Right? So, I figured I could just eliminate the water from the recipe and it’d be a ‘go’! So I poured the sugar and the margarine into the pan, and began melting and stirring…stirring at a full boil for about 10 minutes. Then, since I rarely make homemade candies, I have no candy thermometer, and ended up using the cold water in a cup method to make sure that it had cooked long enough for it to be the ‘crack’ stage.

By that time, it was a rich golden brown, and ready to pour into the prepared cookie sheet. I had covered the sheet with waxed paper for easier handling after it hardened/cooled. In the meantime, I took my bag of chocolate chips [in my case, I used milk chocolate], and melted them in the microwave and added a teaspoon of canola oil to keep it smooth and creamy. Once that was done, I poured the melted chocolate over the toffee and added the crushed pecans on top; covering the nuts/chocolate with another sheet of waxed paper so I could press the nuts into the chocolate.

After cooling for a few hours, I brought the pan out of the ‘fridge and used a paper plate [nothing fancy and no dish to wash afterwards] and cracked the finished toffee into pieces. Yummy. The elimination of water and substituting real butter for margarine worked fine!! I think the trick of it all is to make sure it’s boiled to the fine crack stage on the stovetop!! Really good. And a treat that really shouldn’t be on the menu at all around here, but much needed for the psyche sometimes!!

About | Theme: “CANDY” | Roll
Next week “SHOES”

definition: CANDY – A more or less solid article of confectionery -oftentimes with nuts *hint*!! ::choke:: Oops, excuse me!! Ahhhhhh, ::shrugging:: “Who cares” – “When you get to be my age, talk like this is a given!” “Isn’t it?” “Around here, it is anyway!!

No nuts here…but there is a warning label that states manufactured where nuts are used —don’t know what that means ::giggles::, but in any case…candy!

Easy as one two three!! In fact, three is a serving size. And I say to this, that’s malarkey! Get real…one serving is more like 1/2 bag!!!! At least. And one more thing?——I bought this bag just to have something for the hunt! No, really!! :::hiding my crossed fingers behind my back::: Honest!!! And then, more importantly…..

A sweet confection with perhaps some goobers mixed in for the following? You decide!!

EYE CANDY with the above mentioned additive!!!
This is the program that I’ve saved, in my drawers um….stashed in my chest errrr….in a secret compartment, along with the ticket stubs to Rod Stewart’s Live Concert from 4 years ago! Bud can confirm this – I wouldn’t put our house in Tucson on the market to move to Texas until we got to SEE Rod Baby, Live…and in concert. The event was in August, I had tickets way in advance, AND we didn’t put the house up for sale until the first of September. There was no way, in H E double L, I was gonna miss this!!!

Yes, eye candy.

Friday we went to the opening showing of the newly released movie, Narnia: Prince Caspian. To tell the truth, I vaguely recalled the movie we saw [and have the DVD] that was released in 2005 – “the lion witch and wardrobe” of the series. But, I do remember mostly it was good. LOL As I and Bud love movies, we’ve waited patiently for a well-written movie to be released since the writer’s strike months ago. AND! We’re anxiously awaiting the one coming to town on Thursday of this following week…Indiana Jones! ::humming the theme as I type!:: I. J. and the Crystal Skull looks promising from what I’ve seen in previews, and it perhaps will close the book on a ‘love interest of Indy -Marion- and perhaps introduce us to a ‘new’ Jones…Jr., Jr.!!

Anyway, back to Narnia. It was excellent. I liked this one a LOT better than the first one. I think it had more of a story than the first one too. At least I could understand and follow this one much better. Of course if I hadn’t seen the Lion Witch and Wardrobe first, I would not have known what the heck was going on from the beginning. I must say this one, from the train depot through the adventure [as the mouse says in the movie, "Humans have no imagination!"] and back to the train depot at the end, excellent. The music was great. I don’t think it ever ‘skipped a beat’ with the action. The special effects and the creatures were superb to my estimation. Loved the Narnian ‘tricks’ during the battle and the underground stint…it was clever, and made me want to cheer, of course, ’cause the bad guys were getting their armour skunked. The kids have grown a bit, but still the same cast along with a newbie, the Prince of Caspian. I applaud C. S. Lewis. I’ve never read the book series, but after seeing the 2nd one I’m inclined to sit down and read them someday real soon.

RUBY TUESDAY

I was tagged by
Cheerio at Cheer Up to do this ruby meme. It originated here at World So Wide. It’s quite simple, according to the rules below.

What are the rules?

A. Create a post that has the word or color RUBY or something else RUBY-related or TUESDAY-related in it.
B. In your post, create a link to this Ruby Tuesday meme invitation.
C. Leave a comment here.
D. That’s all!

Okay, the only thing I could really come up with for the fact that would pertain to me personally is some of my ruby glass collection. It all began with this candy dish that Bud surprised me with while on our honeymoon [pictured]. It then turned into an obsession of sorts. I’ve long since stopped buying ruby glass only because if I continued with this collection, I would have no room in the house. LOL In all honesty I have too much now the way it is, and I’ve downsized over the years. Why? Because when my father died, I was the one that lived in the same city….I was the one who had to ask the same of my other siblings “What do you want of the folks stuff?” Well, what wasn’t shipped out to them, I got. And I’ve slowly given pieces here and pieces there to our son and daughter, nieces and nephews. But I did keep some things that brought back such good memories of my youth. Mostly what I kept are now considered antiques. And with those items, no room for ruby glass!!

So, I got carried away a bit there….thing is, if I want to keep my parents’ things, I need to conserve on collecting other things. Otherwise they’d all be packed away and not worth keeping because I can ‘see them daily’ —y’know?

In turn, my ruby glass items are just a small collection. And at the top of all the ‘prizes’, sitting pretty…the ruby glass candy dish from 1968!! On our honeymoon!!!
