Hootin’ Anni’s Book Review, Monday Morsels

This week, my Monday blog is a bit different in the fact that I chose to give a book review of my own opinion of the book that took me all summer to read. Yes, two Sundays ago, I finally finished; I completed the book…all 1168 pages of it. It only took me from June to November to read it. It’s actually a ‘three-books-in-one’ novel.

It was first published in 1957. And it remains a heavily sought after work of fiction. Especially with the economics classes along with literature fields. The characters are strong mostly; some are weak and tend to lend a comedic relief in such a serious topic. Even after two weeks now that I’ve completed the book, it still lingers in my mind.

I, of course, do NOT want to give anything away, but throughout there is a question. A question that is answered – or is it? You must read to find out. Along with the characters, there is a strong setting. A setting of suspense, a setting of familial happenstance[s], of greed, construction and destruction. Strikes, deserters, looters, moochers, teachers, students, scientists, a whole society. Some are warped, while others remain keen and unflinching throughout. There is riches. There is tokens of greatness. High self-esteem, secrets, disappearances, deaths…it’s filled with intrigue.

I found it quite ironic that tho it was written and composed and printed in the 1950′s, and probably no doubt it had its share of criticisms and thoughts of banning back then to us readers….but the book, througout, remains in my mind because of the fact that the way the plot runs; it could well have taken place in today’s times!!! It’s so unrealistic in that aspect. Unrealistic for me in a shocking way. Not that it’s not realistic. It’s ironic. I guess you have to read the book to understand what I’m trying to convey.

I hear that they are making a movie from this novel. I just don’t see how in the world it could be even CLOSE to following the book without being a five hour movie…at least! Altho, I HAVE envisioned the main characters —at least TWO. I have Antonio Banderas playing Francisco…through the entire book! It just has to be Antonio. {LOL} And Dagny? The female lead character? Thank goodness I heard that Angelina Jolie quit the movie production. She just DOESN’T fit the character; she would have been SO WRONG. Again, throughout the book as I read —Dagny should be played by Jennifer Connelly. Okay…so, you can say it: “Anni’s weird”. In all honesty, I think they’d be wiser if they would produce and commit to making this a TV miniseries like Roots! Or Rich Man, Poor Man…or on the way of Thorn Birds. They’d make more money. Oops…money…that’s all part of Atlas Shrugged too.

I tried several times to get this book from the public library since it’s expensive in the bookstores…it was $22.00 for a paperback/softcover!!! But after so many telling me just how excellent it is, I broke down and bought my own copy through Barnes and Noble using an online 30% off coupon. And believe me, it is worth EVERY penny spent. I’m keeping this one. To re-read over and over.

Let me leave you with just a snippet –a teaser– of what’s inside the book covers:

…”An animal is equipped for sustaining its life; its senses provide it with an automatic code of action, an automatic knowledge of what is good for it or evil. It has no power to extend its knowledge or to evade it. In conditions where its knowledge proves inadequate, it dies. But so long as it lives, it acts on its knowledge, with automatic safety and no power of choice, it is unable to ignore its own good, unable to decide to choose the evil and act as its own destroyer.

Man has no automatic code of survival. His particular distinction from all other living species is the necessity to act in the face of alter-natives by means of volitional choice. He has no automatic knowledge of what is good for him or evil, what values his life depends on, what course of action it requires. ….” “Man must obtain his knowledge and choose his actions by a process of thinking, which nature will not force him to perform. Man has the power to act as his own destroyer….”

Ooooooooorah!!!

All U.S. Marines are gung-ho. But, few can match the vision and total commitment of the famous 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune. In 1921 he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921. Gen. Lejeune’s order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps. It further directed that the order be read to all Marines on 10 November of each year to honor the founding of the Marine Corps. Thereafter, 10 November became a unique day for U.S. Marines throughout the world.

To all Veterans around the world…thanks for protecting us in the past, now and in the future. You are remembered! Our freedom comes at a cost of lives, and we give thanks to those who fought for our country. I love and lost the 1st “Love of my Life” from High School….he was shot down in Viet Nam. His platoon sergeant told me in a letter, “Frank never knew what hit him”. I still miss and still mourn the loss….tho he died in valor, I still feel it a waste of such a good life. I honor him today. [His name is on the great wall in Washington D.C. ---I cried so much at the time when I saw it, that I couldn't even touch his name]. Tomorrow, if I can get to scanning, I will have a much better post on all the VETS that I personally have the privilege of calling ‘my own”.

As I told our hostess at Dungaree’s Ablaze when I signed up for the Fun Monday, around here, now that our kids are gone and out on their own, birthdays are just another day. I do remember one time quite a while ago, when Bud turned 50 I had a pizza party. I secretly invited all his co-workers and we had reserved three huge tables —the LONG kind of tables that seat 30 —Anyway, pizza and beer was the hot item, and there was entertainment. LOL [The big gorilla, on stage with his cronies --I remember what the name of the pizza parlor is, it's not Chucky Cheese, but real similar; SHOWBIZ PIZZA. Anyway, Bud was enjoying himself with all his buddies and having a great time until the Gorilla sang happy birthday to him upon my request; along with jeers and cheers from everyone in the restaurant that night including his co-workers. That was a mistake, BIG mistake. So, from that point on...no birthday celebrations!!! He'll never let me forget what I did to embarrass him. Awwwww, poor man.

But, I wanted to share the two photos I just scanned for this meme - of gifts that were given to our kids when they had the actual BIRTH day. What makes them so special is that the 'sock' monkeys were hand sewn and given to our kids by Bud's Grandmother...Irene's and Erik's GREAT Grandmother. Now, written on the back of these photos has ages...5 for Irene and 2 for Erik. That would be 1974; Great Grandmother was born in 1890 so that would have made her nearing 85! She lived to be 106. And to this day, dear ol' Hootin' Anni, still has in her possession the TWO sock monkeys!!

Erik named his Monkey "Bananas"
[his version of speech at the time was "Mabammas, meaning bananas of course"]

…and Irene named hers Peanut!

Our Fun Monday hostess for next week ¿Here?

And on another note about monkeys. Our son, Erik, loved to build things with tinker toys and legos. He’d sit in front of the TV at night while it was on, and really be concentrating on what he was building. And all the time we thought he wasn’t paying any attention to the program itself. Until one night we stood corrected….National Geographic was always something we watched while the kids were still up; awake. And we happened to be watching a special on wild animals. The narrator spoke of their inbred instincts. All of a sudden, just out of the blue, this little boy of ours said:
“I know what stinks. Monkey stink…right Bamammas?”

I so wanted to laugh outloud, but withheld my laughter….he was so serious!!

A good online friend shared this with me the other day, and after I read it, I wanted to pass this wisdom on to those who stop by and read my blog

ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

ALWAYS REMEMBER : Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

We all have them…and if you don’t, you do….you just may not realize it. For some reason or another we all collect something and we collect it for reasons that will definitely make for good reading. So on Monday, I want to see your collection. If you don’t have or don’t want or CAN’T (wink) show us a picture, then tell us what the collection is in 10 words or less. Then tell us why you started collecting it.

This week Mariposa challenged us with a simple version for Fun Monday; we’re supposed to show y’all what we collect. I’m going with the most obvious –even when you see me walking down the street, or sittin’ at my computer, no matter…I’m good at what I collect. Must be jelly ’cause jam don’t shake like this!! And I’m stickin’ by my convictions!

I collect fat cells!! And here’s proof:

…and some day I’ll show you my collection of dust bunnies! Stay tuned.

[in all seriousness tho, I collect wind chimes and they're hanging in a lot of different areas in house and outdoors, stuffed animals -mostly packed away, I collect ruby glass that is stored in the china hutch, I collect glass dolphins which I showed before on this blog [the link should open in a new window]. Cardinals in bone china form. But, mainly, I was just plain lazy this week and the camera was beside me, and my cell collection was very handy and finally –I’m getting more use out of them other than keeping me warm in the winter! It’s about time.

Thirty six years ago on May 19th I gave birth to my son….Erik. Happy birthday dear one. Hope your day is super. Y’know I’ll call you when you get home, don’tcha? Ya, I figured you’d know.

This is a photo of Erik crossing the finish line in his 2nd Honolulu Hawai’i marathon!! He also participated in the Triathlon there representing the USMC. And, he did good…can’t remember which ‘place’ he fielded, but it was the top 10.

Now, for the Show N Tell for the week – - -

Today, I thought I’d share some of our metal signs that we have hanging on the garage wall or work bench. The first one is self explanatory…it hangs just above the entry door into our kitchen from the garage. And the attack cat is Tahoe ‘The HO’ for short. She IS our attack cat. If you heard her growl when a stranger comes near her territory…you’d think she was a dog!!! But then, alas, the attack mode runs out and she heads for cover under a bed, well-hidden!!

The advertising of the passage to ‘nowhere’ aboard the HMS Titanic. And the White Star Line of the ‘gigantic’ ships from years past. We just love this historical part of the sign…and the movie, and the sea. I’d love to have been with Robert Ballard when they found the wreckage and had a first view through the submarine that dived down to find it at the bottom of the Atlantic. So, it was purchased and nailed to Bud’s wooden box on his workbench!

This one above is self explanatory also! Bud found this at one of the souvenir shops on the island here in our area. He was absolutely THRILLED to find something that has my actual spelling of my name…without the “e” tacked on the end!! And it’s posted on the work bench now, just in front of my parking area.

Of course this is a sign especially for Bud. He ‘digs’ this kinda stuff! When you think about it…he being at one time in the Navy and all the different sea ports,…this is probably something very typical of what he saw. Wouldn’t you think?

See? Just like I said…SAILOR. Being aboard ship with all the testosterone gliding on the waves aboard ship, this is probably the kind of sign the men look for when they set foot on land again after so many months at sea. LOLOL

Oh yes, I do like the fun things, but I can be serious also. This is a 3-D relief on tin [and it's NOT in the garage or anywhere close -it is in our home, safe from harm. It's kinda small in size; I've never framed it 'cause I like to have a hands-on experience with this at times]…I fell in love with it at first sight. Below the engraving, is “ECCE HOMO”. The Latin title ‘Ecce Homo’ is taken from the Bible, and means ‘Behold the man!’ These words were said by Pontius Pilate during the trial of Jesus. It reminded me of a painting by Rembrandt, when I read the words below the engraved Christ’s head—-

- – -

And with this that I shared above, and the reminder…. I am not one to ‘preach the gospel’ to others, nor do I appreciate others who try and sway me to their religion. [I strongly believe that each individual...world wide, has their 'own god'; the non-believers are and can be friends also, they have a right to believe what they believe, who am I to judge, I know I'm not perfect.] Still, the painting below is one of my favorite works of art, [this about art, not religion] and I want to give a little background….As the words go, you know then that…..

Pilate presents Christ to the people, who, urged on by their priests, demand His execution, insisting that they have no king but Caesar. In the painting the clock is at the sixth hour. The bust is that of Caesar and represents the Roman state. The priests, who press the staff of judgement upon Pilate, are caricatured by Rembrandt as wholly despicable characters.

This monochrome work is called a ‘grisaille’. It is the preparatory study for an etching made by Rembrandt in 1635. The grisaille was laid onto the etching plate and the design transferred with a stylus. It is the only known example of a full-scale preparatory study for an etching.

Rembrandt, who is the most famous Dutch painter of the 17th century, was also a prolific and accomplished printmaker. His prints were widely collected and occasionally sold for higher prices than some of his paintings.

Heads or Tails this week….”Fool”

The 1st of April, huh? It is my daughter’s birthday! Yep, she was an April Fool’s baby. But, no, I wasn’t the fool…but my mother-in-law was!! LOL

Irene in her Baptizing dress – 1969 White lace with pink underlay

You see it’s a long story. But I’ll try and shorten it a bit to keep y’all from getting bored! Back then, we were quite inseparable as a family unit. In laws getting along with in laws. There was a dinner just about each weekend at one house or another. Then, in July of 1968 I was thinking I must be pregnant. I went to my OBGYN and it was confirmed in August. Well my mother in law was ecstatic. She literally ’bout peed her pants when Bud told her. And of course, a celebratory dinner was planned. She in turn got ahold of my mom and they decided to hold the small family get-together at my folks house since they lived in between our home and the in law’s home. Well, dear MIL brought the champagne. And the dinner was great. Italian. [and yes, I drank a small glass of red wine, I remember] Anyway, we all ended up after dinner playing cards around the table…having a grand ol’ time.

Well, I blurted out somewhere along the line that the Gynecologist said I was carrying a boy. I believed him, MIL believed it instantly, but my father? He just grinned his know it all grin and said nothing.

Months passed. We had a boy’s name picked out. Michael Allen. Blue things were being purchased. And another dinner was planned. This time at the in law’s home. And as usual, card playing afterwards. More talk of ‘a boy’. Then, of all things, my dad popped up and said “Anni’s going to have a girl, not a boy!”

A bet was made. $1000 dollars to go to the baby’s trust fund and a dinner out on the town along with another bottle of champagne on boy vs. girl. MIL…she was so certain it was a boy. Due March 25th actually.

Well, I’m making this long, breaking my promise I made beforehand, aren’t I?

Of course she was born to us….Irene was. [she's named after my mother] AND!!! The dinner the four had [Bud and I weren't in this at all...the betting that is] was at a posh restaurant in town and the champagne was put on ice for an after-dinner treat. All tied in pink ribbons!!

Weeks later I cornered my dad and asked him why he was so sure the baby was a girl. He replied:

“Simple”….”The morning sickness at the beginning.” “And later, you were carrying her just like your mother did when she was carrying a girl”.

I guess like mother, like daughter.

And besides my Mother in Law and the OBGYN – who’s the fool? I think we ALL were fooled by our little bundle of Joy born on April Fool’s Day 39 years ago. Except for Dad. I can still picture him at the hospital during visiting hours, again —his know it all grin!!! And up to the day he died, Irene was his favorite!!!

[note the time posted - exactly 39 years ago today!!!!]

Yesterday, online, it was like a fantasy! I enjoyed all the unselfish giving of all of blogland! It really ‘bloggled’ my mind! From Canada, Philippines, Korea, China, Japan, Ireland, England, Denmark, Belgium, USA, Spain….everywhere across the globe, I received birthday wishes!! I had quite a few visit with me for my birthday blog yesterday….and I spent last night and very early hours this morning, going to each and everyone that sent me a Happy Birthday through the comments left for me in the last three days; if I hadn’t done so yesterday before I left for my birthday outing. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!!! It truly made my day ever so special!!! Along with wishes in the comments, I found several had sent me email with cards attached, and bloggers had some special wishes in their own blogs with…well, just an awesome outpouring of friendship…I just can’t describe it! And, if I failed to stop by and personally leave my ‘thank you’….I profusely apologize and want to say “Thank You ever so Much” right here, right now!!! I know in my soul this is a good world!!! I certainly felt it deeply yesterday:

- – -

I began my day yesterday with an early phone call from my sister. We talked about an hour or so…getting news updated and talked weather. Boy am I sure glad we left Colorado for warmer climes!! I truly learned to detest snowfall, and talking with her and my brother-in-law and those two telling me just what I am missing being here in Texas, makes me feel sorry for them and happy for me. LOL They told me that the whole state of Colorado has been inundated with record snow fall! Al, my B-I-L told me that at one point last week, all and I do mean ALL the mountain passes were closed. There was no way in or out of the mountain towns/cities unless you went south or west to get out of the state and back in from New Mexico. Amazing. But oh so believable. Now, I’m sure the state will be in high flood zones this coming Spring. Anyway….
I then talked with our daughter, Irene, and then our son…we had a 3 way call. That was a lot of fun. You know, even to this day…with the two being grown adults, they still know how to bicker and get ‘my goat’! ROFL!!! I’ve always had to be referee when those two were in the same room. Of course, now it’s become a family joke.

Then, we, as in hubby and I went to the beach to do a little beach combing before we went to lunch. We ended up walking along the shore with the two cutest little kids from out of town. They were here on vacation with their folks. Oh and their parents were just yards ahead of us enjoying the time in the warm tropical climate. The two kids were such chatter-boxes it made me wish they were my two grandsons beside me. :::sigh::: At one time, the kids’ dad came back to us and he had his little boy show Bud and I what he had found in the sand….
A petrified shark’s tooth! I truly think the father was more impressed with the relic than the boy! I imagine that the two kids had no idea just what was so great about their father’s elation…but, I do know that Bud was jealous. LOL After the kids left our side, dear hubby whispered…”Why can’t I find anything like that?” Oh well, guess he’s just not living right. But it was a real pleasant walk along the seaside with the two darling kids. [And I did get permission of course to post this on my blog ---and I promised to pixelate their images, which I did!] Thanks for the great morning kids! You gave me a lot of pleasure chatting with you. “Oh the joys of childhood, huh?”

Afterward, spending a couple hours with the family and walking, we ended up at the nearby hangout, Blackbeards! For my fresh Gulf Shrimp Lunch. This is a neighborhood ‘dive’…nothing fancy at all. But they have some of the best fried shrimp around! Actually, being so near the shrimping areas and the docking —you can’t get any fresher around. Anywhere, at the near by restaurants! Blackbeards is one of the oldest establishments along the city’s bay in this north shore. Pier 99 [another shoreline restaurant] is good too, but always so tiny and always so filled with many people -we didn’t feel like waiting in line to be served!!] This particular restaurant we dined at is reportedly haunted–tales told by both employees and patrons alike.

The atmosphere is ‘port city’ through and through. Pirates, large aquariums, flag ships…things like that that make up the decor. There is also one wall with rock n roll stuff! For instance a signed guitar from Eric Clapton, a few of the Beatles things, some from the Eagles, etc. etc. etc. The back of the establishment’s menu tells the history of the building and the surrounding area. And yes…I had my Jumbo Gulf Shrimp and potatoes! I even sampled some off of hubby’s plate. And I washed it down with a cold ICY Coors Light! [I love my beer VERY cold!!! Much to the chagrin of my ancestors who prefer their 'grog' room temperature!! Ewwwww!!!]

We then left and went shopping along the seaside. Ended up driving down town on the freeway and going into some specialty shops along the way. Where hubby found some sandstone USN coasters and he found me the cutest little Indian Brave figurine…[that, I think will be part of my next Friday's Show N Tell] When done shopping we ended up at the theater as planned and saw a “B” movie. I truly didn’t expect this movie to be an award winning feature, but hey——–having two hours of Matthew McConaughey can’t be all bad! I wasn’t entirely disappointed in the movie…as I said, I didn’t really expect much. It was funny in some parts, but literally stupid in most [the yacht's daughter---Wow, so ignorant it was pathetic; guess tho, she was playing her part the way it was directed! LOL].

Then, after the flick we ended up at the plant nursery on the way home. I’m looking for one particular rose bush…and Old English Rose called Bishop’s Castle. I was told to come back in about a week when the new shipment of roses come in. They assured me that that particular rose species would be there!! I can only hope!!!

All in all it was one super day for me!

About | Theme: HEAVY | Roll
Next week “free”

Great Plains in Winter

Blue snow in the moonlight,
Set back from the road, a house
with a single lamplit window.
The whole world holds its breath.

This is my HEAVY for the week. The photo was taken on February 9th, 1949. The Day I Was Born. The county snowplows cleared the country roads so mom could get to the hospital to deliver. No, really that is true….my family was blessed with good country folk ready to lend a helping hand, and the county officials kept the snow drifts off the country roads into town for her!! In the photo [foreground], two of my uncles and the one with the shovel is my dad who left the hospital after I was born, to help clear the snow in the yard/walkways, off roof-tops and around the barns, etc.; with the help of many neighbors. Heavy snowfall, heavy scooping, but that morning, then – not so heavy mom! LOL
[my dad's height was 5'10" ...]
It’s reported online here that before the blizzard of 1948 – 1949 ended, parts of my home state received over 100 inches of snow and drifts as high as 30 feet.

Oh, and to continue with the ‘heavy theme’ before the day’s over, I will be a bit more HEAVY than when I woke up on my birthday too! I intend to ‘throw caution to the wind’ and celebrate with everything I enjoy. Fried Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, with tons of tartar sauce, and no doubt the fatty greasy french fried potatoes and all the other stuff that I spy on the menu. Then, maybe a movie…with popcorn –heavy on the butter!! The 9th is my birthday. The last year of the 50′s too, so something a bit special pro’ly. Is 59 significant? Well, in my book it is. I’m not only OVER the HILL, but on a slippery road down hill now! But, truthfully, I’ll enjoy the scenery every inch of the way.

The first thing I thought of with the week’s theme was a song by the Hollies [1969] :::singing::: “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I’m strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We’ll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
If I’m laden at all
I’m laden with sadness
That everyone’s heart
Isn’t filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
It’s a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we’re on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn’t weigh me down at all
He ain’t heavy he’s my brother
He’s my brother
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.

The expression was first published:

In 1924, the first editor of Kiwanis Magazine, Roe Fulkerson, published a column carrying the title “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”. Dated September 1924, the article speaks of Fulkerson’s inspiring encounter with “a spindly and physically weak lad” carrying a baby and “staggering towards a neighboring park”. ” ‘Pretty big load for such a small kid’ I said as I met him. ‘Why, mister,’ he smiled, ‘He ain’t heavy; he’s my brother.’ “
