Our Fun Monday host asks of us:

Your job is to doodle this week. Keep a piece of paper near the phone or grab a scrap of paper while you are watching TV. Start with the number 9, for Nine Acres, of course. Draw the number 9 in red and then use a different color for the rest of your doodling. That way we can all see where the original 9 was in your doodle. It is up to you how you incorporate the 9 into the doodle. It can look like something we know, or it can just be shapes. It can be colorful, or can be one color, besides the red 9. When you are finished your doodle, take a picture of it or scan it and post it on Monday.

I can’t wait to hop over there today sometime and see just how I’m going to be analyzed!! hehehehe

Here is my doodles paper, scanned:

…and then, oh oh…do I really want to do this? Just how close will this ‘analysis’ be to the real me? Okay…again, here goes nuttin’!!! *clicking on the analytical site url*

    Cats: Doodles of cats need to be examined carefully. Is it playful in nature, or is it a spiteful/aggressive cat? The nature of the cat indicates it’s meaning. [Mine, of course, is happy!}
Dots: Dots forming a pattern or picture are sometimes the doodles of a fragmented personality. They can also indicate an extreme state of anxiety or a lack of stability. [I think I'm very stable!- but, I used dots for eyes, right?]
Eyes: Doodles of eyes are often sign of a wish to be alluring. However, repeatedly doodled eyes may indicate that they feel constantly watched. [Me alluring? I don't think so!! But, I wonder just what the heck it means when I start with an eye and in red no less?]
Jets: Aeroplanes of all kinds are said to be evidence of a strong sex drive. [Two words - 'Oh sh!t'!!]
Newspaper Headlines: People who fill in or embellish the letters in newspaper headlines are thought to be the soldiers in life rather than the initiatore. [I certainly embellished...my huge Obama and Nov. 4th. Could possibly mean headlines I guess...but I need to get the thesaurus, what the heck is initiatore?]
Portraits: Faces are usually doodled by adolescent girls, seeking to produce an idealized self-portrait. Faces in profile, however, can be a sign of an introverted personality. Comic faces are usually drawn by men, indicating a desire to be the centre of attention. [Oh, so now they call me an adolescent girl with a man's desire to be the center of attention? Well....hmmphf!!! I never!!!]

My own personal analysis would be I’m a sex driven, zoom-zoom, curvy, earring toting beauty queen [kidding!], with a red eye [better than a red a$$, right?] who can be partly sunny in demeanor with a rainy side at the same time; one who loves her kitties and computer, can eat a lot, loves the country for which it stands, and most of all….bubbly!! [Didn't you notice the bubbles coming out of my can of Sprite™?] Could very well be that I play the game ‘cat and mouse’ too, ’cause I made sure that I drew the mouse by the cats/computer!!

Note: I actually checked Google for define:initiatore –it asked if I actually meant ‘initiator’. I feel better now. [and that my friends must be the doodle part of pumpkin pie, Sprite and a shopping list...the initiator in me!!]

And finally, the Halloween Treats:

It’s a different week, and the treat again will be different. This week, it’s a bit on the ‘more Autumn’ kinda treat. With a little “Halloween flair” but more to do with Fall. Photo Hunt category this week: “SAD”

The only thing I could think of depicting the week’s prompt is a photo of a pencil sketch I already posted a few weeks ago along with some of my other sketches [the link should open in a new page if you'd like to view more]…it’s of the ‘sad faced’ Emmett the Clown. I tend to stay away from ‘sad’ if I can!

[comment here if you'd like to skip my Halloween Treats posted below]

Last year, I started a tradition of handing out “treats” and not tricks for my commentors. I will again do the same. If you leave comments for me for anytime during the week, I will choose three to five of those that leave a sweet treat for me in the comments! [the sweet treat being kind words!] But to be fair to all the others, just don’t grab this for yourself…it’s not something for everyone…you have to be picked as you come knocking on my door blog comment link…and actually LEAVE a comment. I then will pick the recipients. And don’t feel cheated, I am going to hand them out daily up until Halloween!!! You have all month to be chosen.

So, check back often, you’re name may show up here!
To begin my traditional fun, as I love Halloween, today’s recipients will be:

Sue
Betty
Melli
Larry

AND!—here is your treat:

[just click on the treat and then it'll open in a new window...grab it there and save it if you'd like to.]

PS —storyteller, aka Virginia, has written many-a-haiku and all of which I’ve really enjoyed. A lot!! This past week, she wrote one about Hootin’ Anni. I so love this! It was a surprise and with her talents, I feel very honored! Stop by here…and don’t forget to leave her a comment, just because!!

Well, hmmmmmm. Last week for Show n Tell, I did tintypes. This week, it’s still on the ‘artsy’ side….but it’s my own pencil sketches. Just a few. I have dozens. So, I picked out these to show. They’ve been done over the years. I must get back to doing this form of work again. It’s been way too long. It’s a form of relaxation and a sense of accomplishing when it’s done. I love to draw!!! [Now that I found my Kira, the Gelfling, I've always wanted to draw Aughra from the same movie.] :::thinking::: Ya, it’s time to get out the ol’ sketch pad and sharpen my heavy lead pencils again—-

Yesterday I couldn’t be online much after 7 am –
First, it rained cats and dogs and a lot of lightning. So, in turn, the computer and big screen TV was unplugged for caution’s sake. And I didn’t get back online ’til late, and that means I didn’t get to visit my blog friends like I normally do. I’ll be catching up today if no storms come our way. We’ve had a lot of hurricane/cyclone activity out in the Atlantic most of the week. But, nothing has developed and dissipated. Still, two remain out there. One closer to the EAST which as I type isn’t predicted to develop. While the 2nd one has a larger percentage of developing into a tropical depression. It’s holding steady near Cuba. And on the news late last night, the forecast is if it does become a tropical storm, the predicted path is toward the eastern shores of USA. But, as always I keep an eye on this during the months of June-November…to make sure. There is always a chance of it coming into the Gulf.

Okay, so you know…we had a huge storm. It lasted only an hour or so, and then it began to clear out. And boy howdy was it miserable outside afterward. The heat index was well over 110 degrees. And the humidity was ‘to die for’. Seriously.

Well, that was okay anyway.

A while ago I saw a nice looking dining room table online through Ashley’s Furniture. It caught my eye. I was looking for something new. Something that would go with all the nautical decor, and yet not be too tacky if you know what I mean. Also, the same finish as our dining room hutch [built in - which means I can't get rid of it unless I tear it out...and that, my friend, is out of the question] and the round ‘knob’ effect going around the table is the same concept of the hardware on the built-in hutch. The black leather seats would ‘go with’ the black leather in the living room [which is visible from the dining room] This just popped up one day while searching online. And I liked it. Our dining room set we’ve had here, we’ve had for nearly 30 years. It was time to get a new set. Just this week, I went back out to the site and the same table I’ve been looking at had an ‘online special’…which means, no shipping charges! That sold me. I ordered it, and it arrived shortly after the storm yesterday.

In turn, Bud and I were tearing out the old stuff, getting it ready to take out, and then putting the new set together. Here it is. Sorry for the dark photos, but if you enlarge them you can see a bit better….

The table & chairs set

close-up of knob on table round

…and close up of hutch knobs! This is what sold me on the table…it matched so well with the hutch hardware.

5:20AM WEDNESDAY update:
Hurricane Dolly. Yes, earlier Tropical Storm Dolly became a hurricane. It’s reported now the winds are 85 miles an hour and the storm is moving around 10 miles an hour [most times, the slower they move through the water, the more they intensify!]

It’s raining here as I type. Heavily. And this is predicted to be our mode for the next day or two. Much localized flooding. The winds are calmer than I anticipated so far, but I’m sure as the hurricane nears the USA/Mexican border, they will become much stronger.

The local beaches throughout the county along our coastline have all been closed because of high surf and tides. The airlines have all cancelled flights in and out of the city. And obviously, for now, we still have power. That too may change as the winds strengthen….

And Anita [from Germany], from your email you were told in your country with your news that Corpus Christi has been evacuated. No…we’re still here. In Brownsville, Texas the evacuation isn’t mandatory either since it’s still a category 1 hurricane. I really appreciate hearing from you – your concern touches my soul. From ALL of you-checking to see if we’re okay. It’s so wonderful to know y’all care!!!

I just had the cable’s weather channel on to see if they had anyone live from Brownsville, Texas –there’ll be a live shot at 6 a.m. – but don’t know if I’ll be able to watch it. As it gets lighter in the day, I may venture out of the house to get a photo or two…depending.

This piece from the TV cable shows an orange outline…because of the hurricane there comes with it tornado threats also…and we’re just to the top orange outline -to the left side of the weatherman’s right shoulder.

This particular photo of the weather report shows the huge area that this storm surrounds…most of the Texas coastline will be affected with water today and tomorrow. Our son in Houston says it’s raining heavily too, and predictions of more rains. But he won’t get the strong wind impact as Corpus will.

So, all in all the storm will be just that for us…fighting strong winds and heavy flooding rains. The eye of the storm continues to be south of us, near the Old Mexico/Texas border near Brownsville, Texas.

Jan has graciously volunteered to host this week’s Fun Monday. And her challenge is all about “Walls”. Jan wanted to know the colors of our walls. Throughout the main section of our home the interior walls are a deep sea turquoise. The living room is of the same color combination, but it’s two layered. The dark turquoise is on the bottom half -separated by a carved wooden lathe all around the entire living room…atop the wooden carved lathe is a lighter shade of turquoise, the walls are covered with my own art work which Bud framed for me. One exterior wall is mostly white brick fireplace with Native American knick knack. The master bedroom is a deep dark wine-purple, and the walls are covered with Gone With the Wind movie stuff, victorian style china and birds. The master bath is wallpapered with copper and wine embossed paper. The dinning room [walls are nautical], kitchen [also nautical] and hallway are all the deep turquoise –as all three rooms [and hallway] are of an opened area. The guest bathroom is done in black! Yes, there are black walls in one small area. The rest is wallpapered with gold, black and rose embossed wallpaper. [it's all oriental]. The library is wall to wall books and my computer desk – the walls are mainly shelves – a small area is covered with light house watercolors and my husbands collection of mermaids [he likes the naked upper torsos I believe -kidding!]. The guest bedroom is done in deep mustard yellow with cherry wood, and it’s all western decor on the walls.

I will share photos of our hallway walls to keep it short.

One section, just outside my computer room/library is this:

Our hallway is mostly dedicated to ‘family’ things. This one wall is all Navy [and one United States Marines suncatcher!]. All of Bud’s ships’ plaques. USS O’Hare [destroyer], USS Taberrer [destroyer escort -this ship also helped rescue Typhon victims -historically], and the USS J D Blackwood [also destroyer escort]. Along with the ships’ framed photos. A wood carving of an ‘old salt’. A dolphin he used to wear around his neck with his dog tags. And a rope knot he tied while aboard one of the ships. Called a Monkey’s Fist. Oh, and another suncatcher, USN.

This is a close up of the Monkey’s Fist knot. I tried to tie one of the same, and I did accomplish the entire knot, but mine?—well, let’s just say it didn’t look like a fist at all! It more or less resembled some kind of jumbled arthritic knot all right, but a fist? Nope, not on your life. It takes a lot of skill and patience to do this. And the knot he tied, is all one piece. How cool is that? I’m always in awe of this talent. He can do many more kinds…but I guess when you’re aboard ship, you have all the time in the world! [don't tell him I just typed that statement!]

On this section of wall along the hallway is a ‘family tree’ of sorts. On the top left is my grandmother. Circa about 1898. To the right of that large picture – on the shelving unit is my mother’s very used bible. Along with her original wedding band and high school graduation ring –atop the rings is her silver thimble. Below the crystal ring holder is the handkerchief that was in the bible on the last page she read before passing away. The small dark item to the bible’s left is Bud’s great grandfather’s pipe [from Ireland]. To it’s left is a collage of our son from birth to the Marine Corps. The other collage is our daughter’s – from birth to her first born child. Below the collages is Bud’s grandmother. And the calendar is a 1940 calendar of our family’s grocery store…they had them printed up for their customers for a holiday gift that year.

This wall is all crosses. The wooden cross is something I asked Bud to carve for me [he carved one before this to give to our son upon his request and I liked it so much, I asked Bud to do one for me!] —The carving is taken from Gun’s and Roses album. Everyone likes it so much I think Bud could sell them…but now, his crippled hands can’t do much in the way of carving with a knife. So, I’m glad he did it when he did. I love it!! And the rosary is my mother’s. The crystal crosses are mine, but the chains broke, so I just pinned them up. And the plaque to the right of all this is my mother’s! It is “The Lord is My Shepherd”. It was hers as a child. I got it when she passed on. It’s been hanging on a wall in all our homes ever since I can remember.

Next week’s hostess is Hula Heart Girl

It’s all about a book collection today [and a couple other things]. I have several more than shown here, but I just grabbed a few. And it’s just pertaining to a certain subject that is dear to my heart. Over the many years I’ve tried to collect as many as I can find. All having to do with Gone With the Wind…the actors and actresses, the movie itself, the author…

and lastly…no need for titling these:

Bud made the frames, I stained them turquoise-green and added the metal and purple beaded branches for effect.

Now, for the Show N Tell for the week – - -

I have this one special area in our home that is decorated for the certain season or holiday. For the past couple of months, it’s been barren. And as most know, when we moved about three years ago to the state of Texas, prior to that, I donated all my craft projects [mainly huge wreaths, grapevine mostly] to Goodwill as we were downsizing for the packing and such. Well, now that we’re completely settled once again, I’ve been trying to reestablish another collection of holiday/seasonal wreath projects. This past couple of weeks I’ve been working on something patriotic in theme for our Independence Day that will be here in less than a month.

And if you don’t know this by now, I’ve nearly become a vegetarian. And I’ve lost several fatty pounds in weight while doing so. Some of my clothes no longer fit properly, so I have slowly packed them in a box with intentions of donating them. When I took them to our donation center, I walked through and found this cute little ratty ol’ thing that would be perfect for my ‘special’ area. I bought it for fifty cents and brought it home, got out my acrylic craft paint box and started cleaning it up and painting it!

The star was quite dirty and brown, natural wood color. It’s wicker, wire and wood. I painted some white stars around the blue wooden section [trying to evenly space them around], painted the wicker red. Then while the white painted stars were still wet, I sprinkled some white frosty glitter for a festive touch.

After that was done, then thinking of what to add for decoration. I have had this Patriotic Beany Baby Teddy Bear perched on a shelf for months and I figured he’d be perfect to glue into the one corner on the left. And as always I ended up at Hobby Lobby this past week in search of some sparkly goodies to add! I purchased a flat miniature wooden USA piece the shape of the states. Painted it frosty white and again added the white glitter. I bought two inexpensive red white and blue streamers, and curled some of them to represent fireworks. I found a small bird house painted in patriotic colors and glued that beside the bear. And then for the finishing touch I sewed his right paw to make a ‘loop’ and stuck an “American” pinwheel to have it ‘look’ like he’s holding it! And then the final step was to add a miniature red cardinal flying out of the birdhouse portal. Done! And hanging in the view of all who walk by!

Here are a couple close-up photos [with captions on mouseover]

If you were here for my Thursday meme, you’d know I didn’t have the opportunity to be online much after the 8 a.m. shift for construction workers; they cut cable by accident. Okay, then…if you also read I had some of the most tasty toffee at the mall. And that I came home and the cable still wasn’t repaired, so I ended up making MORE toffee here at home. Boy howdy, is it good. I searched and searched online for a recipe that DOESN’T use butter. Since it’s loaded with fat that I don’t necessarily need anymore, and try to avoid at all costs.

I couldn’t find one, and all the ones I did find said butter…”No substitute”!!

One I found on the Food Network I thought I could improvise a bit on it. It also called for water. Well, what is margarine [the 98% fat free kind] but rubber flavoring and WATER? Right? So, I figured I could just eliminate the water from the recipe and it’d be a ‘go’! So I poured the sugar and the margarine into the pan, and began melting and stirring…stirring at a full boil for about 10 minutes. Then, since I rarely make homemade candies, I have no candy thermometer, and ended up using the cold water in a cup method to make sure that it had cooked long enough for it to be the ‘crack’ stage.

By that time, it was a rich golden brown, and ready to pour into the prepared cookie sheet. I had covered the sheet with waxed paper for easier handling after it hardened/cooled. In the meantime, I took my bag of chocolate chips [in my case, I used milk chocolate], and melted them in the microwave and added a teaspoon of canola oil to keep it smooth and creamy. Once that was done, I poured the melted chocolate over the toffee and added the crushed pecans on top; covering the nuts/chocolate with another sheet of waxed paper so I could press the nuts into the chocolate.

After cooling for a few hours, I brought the pan out of the ‘fridge and used a paper plate [nothing fancy and no dish to wash afterwards] and cracked the finished toffee into pieces. Yummy. The elimination of water and substituting real butter for margarine worked fine!! I think the trick of it all is to make sure it’s boiled to the fine crack stage on the stovetop!! Really good. And a treat that really shouldn’t be on the menu at all around here, but much needed for the psyche sometimes!!

Karisma is our hostess this week.

She prompted us to share something we’ve made with our own hands [or even feet!]. Her statement for this weeks is as follows:

    I MADE IT MYSELF!

I think the title pretty much says it all, but for those of you who may still be wondering, I would like to see or hear about things you have made with your own two hands (or feet, Im not fussy!) We all have different talents and abilities, maybe you like to sew or knit, chisel or sculpt, draw or paint? Whatever your talent is, please share it with us this week.

- – -

I dabble in art, pencil sketching and painting with oil and watercolor medium, over the years. I also like crafting. Mainly crocheting. Right now, I’m in the middle of two afghan projects. One with a Southwestern design [also sewed on conchos and fringe when complete] and the other one with pansies. I just finished painting in watercolor a brown pelican and started my sketch of another to paint…a Japanese Samurai Swordsman. It is pinned to my easel, but the easel is out in our garage right now, and it’s too hot out there to work. So, it sits and is there for a cooler time. In the past I’ve sketched with pencil. I love that. It can be frustrating and relaxing at the same time. Once, Bud had an old whiskey bottle [Jack Daniels Burbon to be exact] and on it, there was a Charles Russell print. I snatched the bottle from the trash when he was through with it, and drew the Indian Maiden’s image on my sketch pad. It’s now framed and on our “Western decor” living room wall…

If you see by my list of “favorites” on my sidebar here, you’ll notice that my favorite artist is Bev Doolittle. At one time, about twenty or twenty-five years ago, her style was unique [now, many are copying her]. She painted with the use of much camouflage. She’d take a work of nature and paint into the picture hidden things. My favorite is “The Forest Has Eyes”. While I was hospitalized about twelve years ago, for something to do to keep from going stir crazy after being released with orders to remain calm, relaxed and bed-ridden at home, Bud brought a picture puzzle so he and I could work on it while I recuperated. To this day, it too is framed and in our living room. Tho it’s not a work done by me, the puzzle was done by me with a couple of hour’s help from Bud when he was done catching up on the housework/chores….

To point out my fascination of her work, there are Native American faces in the painting…13 of them to be exact. [And to show you an actual print we have of hers, Bud's favorite is "Woodland Encounter". The red fox is very prominent but look closer, in the aspen trees....TWO Indian Men on horseback!!]

Bud made the frames, I did the matting work for both, and added a feather cut out for the last print shown. If you’d like to see her work, up close and personal, click here for Woodland Encounter, and here Forest Has Eyes. [You'll be able to spot the faces and the Indians much better than from my photo.]

As some of my visitors requested – Y’all wanted to see my painting framed. Well, here it is. Bud found an already made, free frame [by that I mean no backing or glass yet] at a frame shop the other day that was just like we had in mind for framing my watercolor pelican I finished a couple of weeks ago. And since barnwood [which we had in mind] is scarce in our town and expensive to get, this was cheaper in the long run to purchase the already made frame and buy the glass for it. I got it all put together, and I’m waiting for Bud to get the frame wire and hooks on the backside so I can hang it. I thought, while I’m waiting for Mr. Pokie to get his duff in gear and move —I’ll snap a picture of it to show y’all the finished painting. I’ve titled it “Afternoon Repose”.

And I started sketching another one. This time it’s Japanese –I don’t know whether it’ll be any good tho, as I have trouble doing hands. My hands always turn out looking deformed. LOL And this sketch I started is a Japanese Samurai. I’ve already started over twice since my shoulders and arms were out of proportion to his head. — If this doesn’t work after a few more attempts I’ll go back to painting ‘nature’ ROFL

But, I’m happy to say my pelican is done. Hopefully it’ll be hanging by the end of the day. If Bud’ll get to it! “Oh Bu-u-ud? Where are you?”
